Top 10 GMO-Filled Foods to Avoid

Making the switch to avoid GMOs in your diet is not only a health-conscious decision, but it is environmentally-smart. According to the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM), studies show having GMO in your diet can lead to organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging, infertility and other long-term problems.

Here are the top 10 foods to avoid in the grocery store when switching to a GMO-free diet.

1. Canned Soup

Although you may enjoy it when you are sick or on a chilly winter day, most pre-made soups contain GMOs. When in doubt, read the label. Soups containing oil made from cottonseed, canola, and/or soybean are the biggest offenders.

 

2. Corn

In 2011, nearly 88 percent of corn grown in the U.S. is genetically modified. The most common modification is to make the corn resistant to herbicide glyphosate, which is used to kills weeds during the growing process. The USDA states that farmers in every state in the U.S. are growing at least some crop of corn with GMOs at any given time.

 

3. Soy

Soy is one of the heaviest genetically modified foods in the country. Found in tofu, vegetarian products, soybean oil, soy flour and numerous other products, soy has been modified to be resistant to herbicides. Approximately 90 percent of soy is genetically engineered to resist Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup.

 

4. Canola Oil

Canola oil has been genetically modified since 1996. As of 2006, nearly 90 percent of canola plants within the U.S. are genetically modified.

 

5. Papayas

Genetically modified papayas have been grown in Hawaii for human consumption since 1999. The modification not only allows the fruit to be resistant of the Papaya Ringspot virus, but it also delays the maturity of the fruit.

 

6. Yellow Squash/Zucchinis

Squash and zucchini are common GMO-filled vegetables because the crop is more prone to viral diseases. The vegetables contain a toxic protein that helps make it more resistant to insects.

 

 7. Meat

You are what you eat, and unfortunately most of the livestock that are used for human consumption are not fed well. The U.S. is one of the world leaders of commercially-produced animal feed for animals that produce eggs, meat and dairy.

 

8. Milk

One fifth of the dairy cows in the U.S. have been given growth hormones to help them grow faster and increase their yield. The chemical used is currently banned in the European Union, Japan, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

 

9. Baby Formula

You want your baby to grow up strong, but often times that means feeding them GMOs as a newborn if you are not careful. Both milk and soy products commonly found in baby formula contain GMO.

 

       10. Alfalfa
In 2011, the USDA approved the growth of genetically modified alfalfa. Alfalfa consists of a gene that makes the crop resistant to herbicide Roundup.

    Genetic modification to endure pesticides like glyphosate and other toxic situations like no water or lack of rich soil is the sickest thing that man has done to our sacred medicine.

        By all means Kendra, continue to eat Non-GMO foods that are laden with herbicides and pesticides. You see GMO foods are grown to resist bugs, no pesticides needed. They are resistant to certain chemicals that can be used to control weeds that become inactive after contact with soil, no harmful pesticides in the streams. Also less tillage needed to kill the weeds, less erosion that pollute the air with dust and wash into rivers altering the flows causing floods.

          You can’t genetically modify foods in nature that were put here by God. We’re not told everything about GMO’s or food additives because massive corporations would crash. Chaos would erupt. GMOS ARE TERRIBLE.

    Denneal Jamison-McClung, associate director of the University of California, Davis International Biotechnology Program discusses the health and safety of GMOs in a recent post. She explains the following:

    “GMO foods have a long, safe track record (17 years in the marketplace). From their introduction in 1996 until now, scientists have found, through repeated and extensive testing, that GMO foods are no more risky than comparable non-GMO foods, nor do they differ in nutritional value.

    “Currently approved GM crops developed through specific genetic additions or subtractions are as safe as conventional and organic crops developed via random genetic shuffling. Most people do not realize that plant breeders have been randomly altering and admixing plant genomes for centuries. Techniques using chemicals and radiation to break plant DNA and induce mutations have been used to develop many conventional and organic crops. Whether using traditional approaches or genetic engineering, the goal of plant scientists is to develop crops with new and agriculturally useful traits. Humans have been changing plant genomes for generations – we just have new, more precise, tools.”

    Genetically modifying foods can be dangerous but is usually done through extensive research and testing. Labelling it “bad for your body and health” is quite inconsiderate of the fact that even non-GMO foods could be bad. In fact, some GMO’s protect us from harmful diseases.
